The Techlash is upon us.
People (and their govยญernยญments) are getยญting frusยญtrated with algorithms and the exploits of our perยญsonยญal informยญaยญtion to influยญence our thinkยญing and actions.
The Techlash is here.
Here we go:
A Strong Emotional Reaction
Where should we focus our attention?
Big Tech is doing what it can to earn more money, legisยญlatยญors are doing what they can to secure more conยญtrol, and users are exchanยญging their perยญsonยญal informยญaยญtion for free services.
In a Facebook disยญcusยญsion yesยญterยญday, sevยญerยญal people I conยญsider intelยญliยญgent and thoughtยญful argued that social media comยญpanยญies would desยญtroy our sociยญety if left unchecked for ten more years.
Social media divides us, but is it also โdesยญtroyยญing society?โ
The recent Cambridge Analytica scanยญdal broke the last seal and stirred our emoยญtions. It broke open a can of silยญicยญon worms. And thereโs no shortยญage of social media issues to discuss:
Were the social media pessยญimยญists corยญrect?
Was Techlash always a foreยญgone conclusion?
Blue State Digital and the 2004 US Election
Before closely examinยญing the Cambridge Analytica scanยญdal, letโs start with Blue State Digital. 1According to BlueStateโs webยญsite: โWe move people to elect presยญidยญents, change laws, fall in love with brands, donate milยญlions, and more.โ
Blue State Digital was founยญded by former staffers of Howard Deanโs 2004 US presยญidยญenยญtial camยญpaign and provided digitยญal serยญvices for the 2008 and 2012 US presยญidยญenยญtial camยญpaigns for Barack Obama.
So, what does Blue State Digitalโs softยญware do for a politยญicยญal camยญpaign? Well, itโs like a large-scale CRM sysยญtem with proยญgramยญmable autoยญmaยญtion rules. For instance, if someone donates $5 to the camยญpaign, this perยญson will be autoยญmatยญicยญally tarยญgeted with a string of mesยญsages difยญferยญent from the series you would be tarยญgeted for if you donated $50 instead.
Of course, donatยญing money is one way to interยญact digitยญally with a politยญicยญal camยญpaign. But there are many othยญer trigยญgers, too.
You could interยญact with the canยญdidยญate on social media, sign up for their newsยญletยญter, or be affilยญiยญated with the party or the presยญidยญent in some othยญer shape or form. 2In 2010, sevยญerยญal Scandinavian politยญicยญal organยญisaยญtions became interยญested in Blue State Digital. However, perยญhaps the popยญuยญlaยญtion of Scandinavian counยญtries was too small for these techยญnoยญloยญgies. I guess โฆ Continue readยญing
I first came in conยญtact with the immense power of big data in 2007. I was responsยญible for launchยญing a Swedish online serยญvice to veriยญfy broadยญband speeds (Bredbandskollen). Later, in 2009, my employยญer, Springtime, acquired Early October to use their proยญpriยญetยญary techยญnoยญlogy, Social Media Lounge, for online monitoring.
A few years later, around 2012, long before the Techlash, everyยญone talked about the potenยญtial of โbig data,โ but few people underยญstood the implications.
Beyond Basic Demographics
Cambridge Analytica was founยญded in 2013. Their busiยญness modยญel was simยญilยญar to Blue State Digital, focusยญing on data minยญing, brokerยญage, and anaยญlysยญisโโโand some conยญsultยญing. 3This is simยญilยญar to the social media intelยญliยญgence agency Whispr Group, where I served as the COO from 2010 to 2013.
Segmenting people based on their comยญmuยญnicยญatยญive behaยญviour is more powerยญful than traยญdiยญtionยญal demoยญgraphยญic segยญmentยญaยญtion. 4Silfwer, J. (2015, June 11). But it wasnโt only the data-minยญing comยญpanยญies that could sense potenยญtial. So did the social netยญworkยญing sites.
As Facebook went pubยญlic in 2012, it took the lead and embarked on an aggressยญive jourยญney to monยญetยญise social media usage.
In short, Facebook went hard for the advertยญising dollar.
Old-school politiยญcians struggle to grasp social media. I can still hear the echo of Mark Zuckerbergโs words, โSenator, we run ads.โ
Advertising is hardly a new monยญetยญisaยญtion modยญel, but Facebook transยญformed the self-serยญviยญcing tarยญgetยญing funcยญtions. With Facebook movยญing forยญward aggressยญively, Cambridge Analytica decided to take a shortยญcut. 5Anyone involved in proยญgramยญmatยญic advertยญising should know Facebookโs Business Manager and tarยญgetยญing capยญabยญilยญitยญies.
The Cambridge Analytica Scandal
A researchยญer at the University of Cambridge, Alexsander Kogan, approached Facebook and asked to colยญlect data for acaยญdemยญic purposes.
For his โstudyโ, he launched a Facebook app called Your Digital Life. The app was used by 270,000 users who were perยญmitยญted to colยญlect data on their friends, which allowed the app to mine data on 87 milยญlion users. 6Cambridge Analytica. (2024, May 13). In Wikipedia. https://โenโ.wikiโpeโdiaโ.org/โwโiโkโiโ/โCโaโmโbโrโiโdโgโeโ_โAโnโaโlโyโtโica
Soon, this data ended up in Cambridge Analyticaโs database.
Among Cambridge Analyticaโs founders and investors was the conยญserยญvatยญive punยญdit Steve Bannon. Bannon divested his holdยญings in the comยญpany in April 2017 when he was appoinยญted White House Chief Strategist. Still, at that point, he had already been workยญing as the CEO for Donald Trumpโs presยญidยญenยญtial bid in August 2016.
And what softยญware did they use to perยญsuade the American opinยญion to vote for Trump? Cambridge Analytica, of course.
To run a US presยญidยญenยญtial camยญpaign on the back of illegยญally (and unethยญicยญally) acquired data was, of course, a scanยญdal in its own right.
In addiยญtion, with large data volumes on variยญous online behaยญviours of US citยญizens, Cambridge Analytica proยญfiled voters matchยญing their psyยญchoยญgraphยญic behaviours.
The Power of Psychographic Analysis
Psychographic tools (such as Myers-Briggs and The Big Five Aspects Scale) allow people to be assigned to groups based on their past behaยญviour and preยญdicted future activยญity. This gave answers on who to tarยญget and how to trigยญger them psychologically.
โCambridge Analyticaโs use of data anaยญlytยญics and microtarยญgetยญing in politยญicยญal camยญpaigns, comยญbined with psyยญchoยญloยญgicยญal tacยญtics, helped secure Donald Trumpโs vicยญtory in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.โ

The Techlash is Here To Stay
Expect a power struggle between the big tech comยญpanยญies on the one sideโโโand legisยญlatยญors and the news media on the other.
In the wake of the scanยญdal, Cambridge Analytica closed its operยญaยญtions in 2018. Several execยญutยญives moved to Emerdata, owned by the same parยญent comยญpany and reside in the same buildยญing in London.
But the Techlash has already gained too much momentum to stop. 8Techlash, accordยญing to Financial Times: โ(noun) The growยญing pubยญlic animยญosยญity towards large Silicon Valley platยญform techยญnoยญlogy comยญpanยญies and their Chinese equiยญvalยญents.โ
This is a war for our minds.
