Public Relations vs Publicity
The terms public relations (PR) and publicity are often used interchangeably.
However, that is incorrect.
Publicity refers to gaining media coverage, often to increase awareness about a particular event, product, or person. It’s about getting attention in the media, whether it’s through news articles, TV appearances, or social media mentions.
PR, on the other hand, is a much broader strategic discipline that encompasses publicity, reputation management, crisis communication, content creation, and relationship-building with various stakeholders, including employees, investors, and the public.
PR is a long-term strategy focused on shaping and maintaining an organization’s image and fostering strong, sustained connections with key audiences. Publicity is just one tool within the broader PR toolbox, often used to support more extensive, ongoing efforts to build and protect a brand’s reputation.
Generating publicity is a subset of what PR professionals do — mainly within media relations. Media relations, in turn, is one of several subsets of public relations. 1However, please note that public relations is not a subset of communications; PR and communications are synonymous in the corporate context. 2Silfwer, J.
