Are you doing enoughโโโfor content?
โFor conยญtent!โ = a stateยญment used on the interยญnet for someยญthing thatโs usuยญally unacยญceptยญable in norยญmal sociยญety, but is excused because it is for the purยญpose of a YouTube video.

Should your brand take notes from popยญuยญlar streamยญers and put more on stake to proยญduce betยญter content?
Here we go:
The Online Chess Boom
Lately, Iโve been fasยญcinยญated by the world of chess.
The embodยญiยญment of the game used to be the idea of two all-seeยญing titans, with stern foreยญheads frowned in deep thought, waging an intelยญlecยญtuยญal war against each othยญer over the boardโโโin silence.
Back then, imaยญgine being givยญen the folยญlowยญing PR brief:
โTurn chess into a playยญful and fast-paced venยญue for youthยญful expresยญsion. Make it less dull and highยญbrow. Make it digitยญal-first. Also, please make learnยญing about the game a dynamยญic and creยญatยญive grassยญroots movement.โ
Quite the PR chalยญlenge, indeed.
Still, we know how it happened. In December 2019, the Covid-19 panยญdemยญic hit and forced many of us into quarยญantยญine for many months. And then, in October 2020, the Netflix minยญiserยญies The Queenโs Gambit aired.
โChess app downยญloads on the App Store and Google Play Store rose by 63% after the show [The Queenโs Gambit] debยญuted. Chessโ.com saw more than twice as many account regisยญtraยญtions in November as it had in preยญviยญous months, and the numยญber of games played monthly on Lichess doubled as well. There was also a demoยญgraphยญic shift in playยญers, with female regisยญtraยญtion on Chessโ.com shiftยญing from 22% of new playยญers to 27% of new playยญers.โ

Todayโs Online Chess Space
Todayโs online chess space is sparkยญling with activยญity and engageยญment. And itโs not just about chessโโโthe playยญers are becomยญing bonยญafide online superยญstars. And with online superยญstarยญdom and lively comยญmunitยญies come drama and mainยญstream publicity.
The othยญer day, I watched a YouTube video with the Botez sisยญters, Alexandra and Andrea. Another popยญuยญlar chess streamยญer, Anna Cramling, the daughยญter of grandยญmasยญters Pia Cramling and Juan Manuel Bellรณn Lรณpez, feaยญtured them.
The three streamยญers had met to enjoy a couple of fast games while soakยญing in the sun next to a swimยญming pool and to creยญate live chess content.
Stakes were added to the games to make the conยญtent more engaยญging. The loser had to jump into the pool with their clothes on while the two othยญers would relay some of the excited reacยญtions from their live chat channels.
On this day, Cramling lostโโโand into the pool she went.
Adding Stakes To Fuel Engagement
Adding stakes to make the conยญtent more engaยญging is typยญicยญal for the Botez sisยญters. A young chess playยญer chalยญlenged Andrea Botez for her Snap (boomer claยญriยญficยญaยญtion: thatโs the equiยญvalยญent of getยญting someoneโs phone numยญber). And Iโve seen the Botez sisยญters dare each othยญer to run laps in pubยญlic while flapยญping like a chickยญen.
Just your typยญicยญal interยญnet stuff, right?
Well, hereโs my point: Itโs not that chess is borยญing. But if you can make your video conยญtent more fun, interยญestยญing, and engaยญging, why wouldnโt you?
When itโs time for the loser to jump in the pool, share their Snap, or run laps while flapยญping like a chickยญen, you often hear the modยญern battle cry of the social media influencer:
โFor conยญtent!โ
People Who Donโt Race Sailboats
Going the extra mile for betยญter conยญtent isnโt just an online chess pheยญnomenยญon. Social media influยญenยญcers of all variยญetยญies underยญstand that they must go the extra mile to keep their audiยญences engaged. Some, like the notoriยญous YouTuber MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), take the concept of โFor conยญtent!โ furยญther than most, but still.
Is this silly?
Iโm conยญsidยญerยญing a fantยญastยญic scene in The West Wing feaยญturยญing US President Josiah Bartlett (Martin Sheen) and the straยญtegic camยญpaign adviser Bruno Gianelli (Ron Silver).
Gianelli argues that itโs difยญfiยญcult to coรถperยญate with proยญfesยญsionยญals who donโt race sailยญboats. When racing sailยญboats, kelp someยญtimes gets stuck to the hull. The kelp causes a slight drag. If you try to remove it using a stick, it will cause more drag than the kelp, so you must use a speยญcifยญic techยญnique to preยญserve every bit of momentum.
Gianelliโs point is that he jumps at even the slightยญest opporยญtunยญity to mainยญtain or increase momentum.
Is Gianelli being silly?
To him, every advantยญage matters.
Evoking Sentiment โFor Content!โ
As a readยญer of this blog, youโre probยญably a proยญfesยญsionยญal comยญmuยญnicยญatยญor. Am I telling you to spice up your next press release by jumpยญing into a swimยญming pool โฆ for content?
Well, I am sayยญing preยญcisely that.
The media landยญscape of todayโs attenยญtion ecoยญnomy is fierce. We would be wise to take the influยญenยญcer battle cry โFor conยญtent!โ seriously.
โPeople want to be loved; failยญing that admired; failยญing that feared; failยญing that hated and desยญpised. They want to evoke some sort of senยญtiยญment. The soul shudยญders before obliยญviยญon and seeks conยญnecยญtion at any price.โ
โ Hjalmar Sรถderberg (1869โ1941), Swedish author
Iโve worked with corยญporยญate comยญmuยญnicยญaยญtions in variยญous forms since 2005. Itโs a facยญtuยญal stateยญment that all facets of corยญporยญate conยญtent typยญicยญally lack perยญsonยญalยญity, style, emoยญtionยญal charge, charยญacยญter, attiยญtude, fun, and eccentricity.
When you strip corยญporยญate conยญtent of humanityโs beauยญtiยญful quirkยญiยญness, whatever youโll be left with is โฆ cringe-worthy. And corยญporยญate cringe is far worse than adding some odd flaยญvour to your PR messaging.
Jump Into the Swimming Pool
You may not have to jump into a swimยญming pool to boost your conยญtent strategy. But, for instance, have you ever conยญsidered adding stakes to your comยญmuยญnicยญaยญtion? No? Huh.
Take a close look at your next piece of conยญtent schedยญuled for pubยญlishยญing. Have you gone the extra mile? Are your conยญtent creยญation ideas worthy of attenยญtion? Are you sure that there is no kelp stuck to your hull?
Ask yourยญself: What more can your brand doโโโfor content?
Thanks for readยญing. Please supยญport my blog by sharยญing artยญicles with othยญer comยญmuยญnicยญaยญtions and marยญketยญing proยญfesยญsionยญals. You might also conยญsider my PR serยญvices or speakยญing engageยญments.

Attention is an essenยญtial comยญponยญent of pubยญlic relations:
And itโs not just organยญisaยญtions. We all seem to crave attenยญtion in some form or another:
