What are the typยญicยญal storytelling elements?

In storytelling, some things workโ€‰โ€”โ€‰again and again.

Iโ€™ve disยญtilled some of the most widely used storytelling eleยญments from the basic โ€œHollywood-styleโ€ format.

As a pubยญlic relaยญtions proยญfesยญsionยญal since 2005, I find the study of draยญmatยญic comยญposยญiยญtion fascinating.

Here we go:

Storytelling Elements

Some storytelling eleยญments keep appearยญing in both old and new storยญies. There is no need to fix them if they are not broken, right?

โ€œDramaturgy is the study of draยญmatยญic comยญposยญiยญtion and the repยญresยญentยญaยญtion of the main eleยญments of drama on the stage.โ€

Here are some of the most widely used storytelling eleยญments (in chroยญnoยญloยญgicยญal order):

1. The Contract

In the very beginยญning, you have to make a promยญise. Will this be violยญent? Scary? Fun? Tense? Dramatic?

2. The Pull

Provide conยญtext to pull the audiยญence into your story.

3. The Incident

The event sets the story in motion. It should occur early and keep the story movยญing forward.

4. The Reveal

Allow your charยญacยญters to learn what the story is aboutโ€‰โ€”โ€‰and whatโ€™s at stake.

5. Point of No Return

The forces of good face an impossible decision that conยญcerns fear, safety, love, hate, revenge, or despair.

6. Anti-Climax

You must allow the forces of evil to have this epic win.

7. All-is-Lost Moment

The moment where all is lost. It would help if you porยญtrayed the most proยญfound desยญpair for the forces of good.

8. News of Hope

A posยญsibยญilยญity for a side charยญacยญter to shine. A light that shines into the total darkยญness of the moment.

9. The Climax

The shit hits the fan, and the good puts everything at risk but overยญcomesโ€‰โ€”โ€‰desยญpite impossible odds.

10. The Pay-Off

Public disยญplays of relief and hapยญpiยญness, love, and forยญgiveยญness. We also learn that the hero has evolved.
