Advice for Public Relations Internships
I’ve comÂpiled a list of advice to maxÂimÂise your pubÂlic relaÂtions internÂship and set yourÂself up for sucÂcess. These tips will serve you well toward becomÂing a PR superstar:
Always carry a Moleskine everyÂwhere. A trusty noteÂbook like a Moleskine is essenÂtial for jotÂting down ideas, insights, and importÂant informÂaÂtion on the go, ensurÂing you nevÂer miss a valuÂable thought or opporÂtunÂity for inspirÂaÂtion. Also, if a cliÂent or colÂleague tells you someÂthing, please be sure to show them respect by notÂing what they say.
Believe in your abilÂity to come up with betÂter ideas and soluÂtions. Trust your creÂativÂity and probÂlem-solvÂing skills to innovÂate and think outÂside the box, always strivÂing to offer fresh perÂspectÂives and soluÂtions that drive resÂults and exceed expectÂaÂtions. When faced with obstacles or conÂstraints, think creÂatÂively and explore alternÂatÂive soluÂtions. Whether findÂing a last-minute venÂue for a press conÂferÂence or adaptÂing to chanÂging cliÂent demands, your abilÂity to think on your feet will set you apart as a valuÂable asset to your team. 2Silfwer, J. You can always strive to be more proÂactÂive. Take iniÂtiÂatÂive and seek ways to conÂtribÂute beyÂond your assigned tasks and responsÂibÂilÂitÂies. Volunteer for new proÂjects, offer to assist your colÂleagues and look for opporÂtunÂitÂies to add value to your team. By demonÂstratÂing iniÂtiÂatÂive and a willÂingÂness to go above and beyÂond, you’ll posÂiÂtion yourÂself as a proÂactÂive and indisÂpensÂable memÂber of the PR team.
The Devil’s in the details. In pubÂlic relaÂtions, attenÂtion to detail can make all the difÂferÂence between sucÂcess and failÂure. Whether you’re proofreadÂing a press release or schedulÂing media interÂviews, accurÂacy and preÂciÂsion are paraÂmount. Cultivate triple-checkÂing your work and mainÂtainÂing meticÂuÂlous records to ensure nothÂing slips through the cracks.
Memorise a perÂsonÂal elevÂatÂor pitch. Be preÂpared to introÂduce yourÂself in variÂous proÂfesÂsionÂal setÂtings. Your elevÂatÂor pitch should give the listenÂers your name, title, backÂground, how you conÂtribÂute, and someÂthing that will make you memÂorÂable. As a pubÂlic relaÂtions intern, no one expects your life story, so keep it short and snappy.
Don’t let fear of failÂure stop you from tryÂing again and again. Public relaÂtions can be fast-paced and demandÂing, requirÂing resiÂliÂence and adaptÂabÂilÂity to navÂigÂate highs and lows. Embrace setÂbacks and chalÂlenges as opporÂtunÂitÂies for growth, and mainÂtain a posÂitÂive attiÂtude even in adversity. By stayÂing resiÂliÂent, you’ll weathÂer the inevÂitÂable storms of PR with grace and resilience.
Always make sure to underÂstand how money is being made. How exactly is the agency makÂing money? How exactly are the agency’s cliÂents makÂing their money? How can the agency make money from havÂing you onboard? Understanding how money is being made at all times is nevÂer a wasted effort.
Bring a story to work each day. There will be small talk around cofÂfee machines daily. Don’t be borÂing; make it a habit to bring a fresh and funny story from your life to work each day.
By embraÂcing this advice, you’ll set yourÂself up for sucÂcess and maxÂimÂise your pubÂlic relaÂtions internÂship experience.
